Standing Strong in Uncertain Times
Know Your Rights - Protecting Tribal Members & Indigenous Communities
We know that these are uncertain times. Many of us feel unsettled, anxious, and even fearful about what the future holds—especially when it comes to interactions with law enforcement and immigration authorities. But one thing remains true: you have rights, and knowing them is one of the most powerful ways to protect yourself, your family, and your community.
As Native people, we must also remain vigilant in asserting our sovereignty and ensuring that tribal members are protected under both federal and tribal laws. Whether you are a U.S. citizen, a lawful resident, a Tribal member, or undocumented, the U.S. Constitution guarantees fundamental protections to everyone living in this country. You do not have to answer questions about your immigration status, consent to a search, or sign any documents without understanding them fully.

Protect Yourself & Your Family
We strongly recommend that all Tribal members and their families obtain Tribal identification cards and, if applicable, a Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood (CDIB). These documents can be crucial in asserting your identity, tribal affiliation, and rights in legal matters.
Additionally, ensure that you and your family members carry at least one valid form of identification at all times, such as:
✔ Tribal ID Card
✔ CDIB Certificate
✔ State-Issued ID or Driver’s License
✔ U.S. Passport (if applicable)
Having proper documentation can prevent unnecessary detention and ensure your rights are respected in any legal situation.
